Easily Install Rockbox on your Ipod Classic, 6th and 7th generation. (Linux)

In this short tutorial I will show you how to easily install Rockbox on an Ipod Classic, 6th and 7th generation.  I will be doing this using Debian testing but it should work using any Linux distribution. I used this method to install Rockbox on my own Ipod Classic 160gb, 7th gen, and I use it every day with no issues.

Warning: This worked for me but I hold no responsibility to any damage done to your Ipod.  Proceed at your own risk!

First we need to download the Rockbox Utility.

Linux 32 bit x86: here

Linux 64 bit x86: here

I chose to download the file to my desktop for ease of use.

Extract the contents to your working directory. You should now have a folder named RockboxUtility-xxx and within that, an executable file named RockboxUtility.

Now plug in your ipod and close any associated applications. Make sure your Ipod is mounted.

Note: The Rockbox Utility uses QT 4, and I had to make a few adjustments to make the application viewable. You may have to as well, depending on your system.

Next launch the installer by either double clicking the icon or open a terminal, cd into the installer's directory, and issue this command:

./RockboxUtility

You should see a screen with a configuration error.  This is because we have not yet configured the Rockbox Utility for your Ipod.

Click OK and a configuration window should appear.

You can try the Autodetect option if you wish, but it'll just prompt you to manually select your device and it's mountpoint.

Click OK to clear this message.

In the configuration window, we will only be working with the "Device" tab.

Using the drop down menu labeled "Select your device in the filesystem", select your Ipod's mount point.

Then check the box labeled "Show disabled targets". You will be prompted with a warning, click OK to clear it.

In the area labeled "Select your audio player", expand Apple, and select "Ipod Classic (6th gen) (Unknown)"

Click OK to proceed to the installation window.

Here we will only be working with the Installation tab.

Under "Rockbox components to install", be sure to check mark Rockbox and Fonts.

The themes option claims there are no themes available, but you can get themes online after installation. They are pretty easy to find, install, and use. I left this option unchecked.

I didn't checkmark the Game Files option, but you may want to include this option if you are into games.

Finally, click Install!

When installation is complete, click OK.

Unmount your Ipod properly.

VERY IMPORTANT: Reboot the Ipod by holding down the select and menu buttons at the same time until the screen goes black.

You should now have Rockbox installed on your Ipod Classic!
